I was already going to do a post today. But then this morning I watched something on youtube that shocked me! A man was interviewing people on the streets, asking them why we celebrated the 4th. Very few had a clue! I just can't imagine! One woman (not a foreigner) was asked...she hadn't a clue so she said to ask her daughter who had just graduated from high school. Yep, You guessed it! The graduate hadn't a clue either!! What are they pushing out of the public school system these days! I will however give this woman a break. She just had the overall appearance of a low information voter. I suspect that was the case. Raised by the government all her life. She probably had no clue about history. Except maybe how much whites owed her for slavery. Just my suspicion.
Last night our brother in law invited us to the boat club for their annual fireworks display. Right before the fireworks were started they played a recording of the Star Spangled Banner as we pledged the flag. It was beautiful. You can bet I am going to raise Liam to know what this day means. And what America used to stand for! I say used to, because, unless there is an uprising big enough to get the job done, then there is no more America. As it stands, my grandparents would not recognize it right now.
But back to last night. Liam's very first actual firework display was a huge success as far as he was concerned! And they did do a really good job! The fireworks were shot out over the Willamette river and the night was clear so everything was perfect! There were three or four duds in the bunch...I am not sure why the duds are the most noisy! But my ear drums survived and we really had a great time! He got to play with other kids, enjoy candy, and swing around glow sticks. Great fun for a little guy who has done nothing but talk about fireworks for days on end! After tonight he will have to find a different subject. My ears are ready for that!
Tonight we will let off a few along with the neighbors across the street. At least I assume the neighbors across the street will be doing fireworks. Their kids are getting older and may be wanting more grown up activity. We will see. I think tonight we will eat dinner on the patio. Liam will like that. We have to have leftovers so they don't go to waste...otherwise a bbq would be great. But it will still be fun eating outside.
So...that wraps up my Independence Day post. And now for a Liamism: Yesterday as I was leaving the house to follow Craig to the mechanic with the truck, a beat up pickup pulled into the driveway of the vacant house next door and the driver disappeared. I never saw him cross the street. I have seen this truck once before over there. A lot of damage is being done behind the house next door...kids have spray painted pink all over the back of the house and taken all the first floor screens from the windows to build forts with. The water feature is full of garbage and the whole place is appealing in its overgrown jungleness. Liam couldn't figure out why I drove to city hall and the firestation looking for a policeman. And why I circled back home and in a Hollywood moment, went into the back yard to see if that is where he had gone. I told him there was a fellow next door that had me concerned to leave the house. Well...this morning when I went out as the men were changing the oil in my car I told Craig that I had seen the fellow drive up again and this time he did go across the street. Obviously the new boy friend. Craig said that yes, they had seen him and that he had waved to Liam. At which point Liam said to me..."mom, he is not a fellow, he is a guy...its okay". I am relieved.
Have a wonderful Fourth everyone!
