My two men hard at work. The beds were so overgrown with weeds, and I am not talking a handful of weeds. I am talking hundreds of monster weeds! Some with root systems that had to have reached China over the winter! Today I will get this bed planted. Green beans and some heirloom dry beans. Behind that mess of stuff in the back of the picture is the last bed left to weed and till. Fortunately it is a smaller one. I can't wait to take pictures of all the beds clean and full of food and the pots and stuff that are lying around picked up and put away. It can be a very attractive yard when it is cleaned up!
Craig tilled this area beside the house for me. Since this ground has never been worked and was all the horrible 'dirt' that the builder brought in it required a lot of supplementing. Liam spent at least an hour filling his little wheelbarrow at the dirt pile, wheeling it to this area and dumping it. He brought in so much on his own that I only needed to give each plant that went in a trowel full in its hole. We were so proud of how diligently he worked! This is now full of Impatients with a Hydrangea that was given to me last year.
So, the plan for today....plant the beans, clean out the last bed and Liam will plant some beans and sunflowers. He picked out watermelon and sunflower seeds but then we found an established, very healthy looking watermelon seedling so we chose that instead. We really do not have the long hot growing season for them. Not that I am complaining! We also have an area where the grass has come up thick through the weedblock and is almost impossible to pull out. I am hoping that Craig will do another layer of weedblock and then a thick layer of gravel. Then maybe we can keep it under control. He has already sprayed it ...we will see. I can't wait to get everything done so I can take pictures of the finished product and share them! Stay tuned!
