We have been quite busy the last few days in the back yard. Since I failed miserably in cleaning out the garden beds last year I am dealing now with that mess. I do believe that the tomato plants continued to grow all winer without their leaves. It was like pulling out trees! David got the raspberry bed cleaned out yesterday of huge grass...with the toughest root systems on the planet! Craig did some tilling on Tuesday. But there is still a lot to go! We are down to just a small area left to weed in the walk ways. That feels good. I love looking out at how tidy it looks all weeded and cared for.
When We moved in Craig went around to all the other homes being built and picked up the scraps of sod that were not being used...he patched together a very small yard area behind the house and an even smaller one for the enclosed cat yard. The yard area behind the house has never been super happy and up against the house it has always been brown with huge weeds. So Craig tilled that for me as well and I will be planting flowers there...I need to find flowers or plants that mainly like shade as that area only has the morning sun.
As much as I like fall and winter....and I REALLY liike fall and winter...I love spring and the hopes of the gardening season.
Bocky is doing well....he is healing nicely and is quite a comical fellow. He will always have an issue with his tail though. Since half of it was ripped away and only stitching it would have fixed that...I am not sure how proud looking that tail will be when it is fully feathered out. There is exposed dirt everywhere in back but he chooses to take his dust baths in the only bed that has something growing in it on purpose....peas. So I have laid down tomato cages to keep him from that area. Today Craig and David are picking up a chicken coop. After having this sweet guy I have realized I do miss chickens. So this coop will go in the cat yard which we no longer need for cats. In the picture it appears large enough for three hens and the yard is plenty big for that many as well. We also have an idea of how to keep them out of the raised beds while I am growing things, that won't break the bank. Giving them a lot more roaming room. I am not sure if I am going to get those chickens this year or wait. We will see...there are still chicks being sold in the feed store and my sister knows a lady who sells 'teenage' chickens. Sadly Bocky can't stay with us because soon he will come into his own and though the city feels it is permissible for dogs to bark unchecked 24/7 they take issue with a rooster. I am just thankful they made a favorable decision about hens!
Have a wonderful day!
